Dictionary definition: A Scots word meaning tangled, snarled, twisted, or generally in a muddle, confused and drunk.
Origin of the extra “f”: The additional “f” comes from many years of sailing and racing culture, where a badly tangled rope was rarely described as merely “fankled” — there was almost always another word immediately before it.
